Kate Burt added this to Houzz Tour: A Small Victorian Terrace Gains Dramatically More Space
The team also added coving to what had been unembellished walls when the project started. “It had probably been updated in the 1970s, when all of that kind of detailing, if it was ever there, was probably stripped out,” says Spiring. “There was even a sliding glass serving hatch through to the kitchen.”A detail on the ground floor that has further added to the sense of space is that Spiring had the old, floating timber floor removed. “It meant we could dig down and gain about 20-30cm height in the room and install underfloor heating.” He was then able to lower all the floors slightly, and this had a knock-on effect for the loft conversion. “Traditionally when you do a loft conversion, you get around 2m height, but with this change below we ended up with a 2.3m height, so it feels like a proper room. This is where the master bedroom is, so it’s a significant detail.” The flooring downstairs is engineered oak whitewashed with Osmo oil. “This is something you can do if you buy your flooring unfinished,” Spiring explains. “You do it gradually, adding one coat at a time until you get the tint you’re after.”

Storage, storage, storage oh how I Love storage! I want exactly something like this to either be in my living room, bedroom or both! I love the shelves and the couches, and I adore the table, how low it is makes it look very stylish.

Soften the tone Floor to ceiling glazing, whilst filling a room with light, can sometimes seem a little stark. Using a dark shade on the walls will help to soften and warm up the space.

Home Addition

Clients' first home and there forever home with a family of four and in laws close, this home needed to be able to grow with the family. This most recent growth included a few home additions including the kids bathrooms (on suite) added on to the East end, the two original bathrooms were converted into one larger hall bath, the kitchen wall was blown out, entrying into a complete 22'x22' great room addition with a mudroom and half bath leading to the garage and the final addition a third car garage. This space is transitional and classic to last the test of time.

Question about the beam - wonderful design for the living room! - What type of beam was used? Was a wooden box constructed or a real wooden beam used? And what color is the stain? Thank you.

the stain color is a custom from profile cabinets. The wood beam is actually three pieces attached to the structural beam needed to hide electrical. The finish is distressed and the color was Brazilian root.

This picture of a traditional living room is an example of a balanced asymmetrical room. The room is balanced, but on one side there is a couch, while on the other there are two chairs to balance out the size of the couch, that way the room does not feel heavy on one side, causing the room to feel tilted.

This is an example of Asymmetrical Balance. Other than the wall with the fireplace everything is in different spots from the other one of it. I like how warm the couches, stools, and stone on the fireplace looks. I also like how the hardwood looks in this.

Great living room: functional, classic, nice for company, big. Don't know if tv would work in here...a small sun porch would still be nice in this home even though this room is very bright. Nice to have multifunction...or all functioning spaces
